Description
Popcorn Beach is a famous natural phenomenon on the island, it is officially named "Playa del Bajo de la Burra".
It is not your typical beach, as instead of pebbles or sand, this beach actually consists of small white algae fossils that cover much of the coast look exactly like popcorn.
These marine algae are called rhodoliths and although initially red in color, they turn white over time. The waves push them ashore, also helping to give them their unique shape.
This natural phenomenon can be observed in other beaches too, there is a smaller beach near Sunset Lounge but not as impressive.
Popcorn Beach is located on the northern coast of Fuerteventura, close to the town of Corralejo in the municipality of La Oliva.
You can walk to the beach from Corralejo, it takes about an hour and is accessed from the unpaved road to Majanicho behind the bus station. Be sure to take some water to avoid getting dehydrated.
You can drive to Popcorn Beach, following the same road but be aware that hire cars are not insured for "off roading" which includes unpaved roads.
The distance from the port of Morro Jable is approximately 120 km about 90 minutes in a car.
From Puerto del Rosario, 41 km approximately it is a 40 minute drive.
Please don't try to eat the "popcorn" and especially don't be tempted to take it home with you as you could face a large fine.
