Museum de Las Batallas (Battles) de El Cuchillete y Tamasite

The Casa de Las Simonas is the interpretation centre dedicated to exploring and understanding two pivotal historical events that unfolded in Fuerteventura in 1740: The Battles of El Cuchillete and Tamasite. During these encounters, English privateers launched attacks against the town of Tuineje. Remarkably, the local militia and villagers responded with resilience and bravery, managing to defend their town despite being unprepared and armed only with stones and sticks.

Since that formidable defence, the victories have been commemorated annually through the San Miguel Arcángel Festival. These celebrations have grown in significance, transcending mere festivities to become a vital part of the island’s historical, social, and cultural fabric. Their importance has been recognised with top designations such as Festivals of National Tourist Interest, in addition to existing titles of Cultural Interest (BIC) and Regional Tourist Interest.

Today, these festivals showcase an impressive display of enthusiasm, cultural sentiment, and living history. They serve as a vibrant reminder of the island’s resilience and the enduring spirit of its inhabitants, capturing the imagination of both visitors and locals alike.
