Sometimes known as the windy island because of the trade winds blowing mainly from the north. On occasion, the wind changes direction to come from the east or south-east, this can bring a Calima which is dust and sand from the Sahara in the air. Don’t be put off though, because in reality it is mostly breezy which is very welcome on a hot day. The breeze creates optimal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing, especially during the spring and summer months.
There is very little rainfall on the island but on the odd day when it does rain, it tends to pour for a few minutes overwhelming the drains and gullies. When there’s a forecast for rain, it tends to be during the night but also may only last for a short spell.
Days in the Canary Islands are long even in winter and mostly sunny. Temperatures are usually comfortable all year round and suitable for beach days and water sports. It can get cool in once the sunsets in the winter months so but a hoody or cardigan is usually enough to keep you warm.

Monthly average day and night temperatures in Centigrade.
